Healthy cookies for dogs

We don’t just worry about people’s health in our house, but our pup Sadie’s health, too! Sadie is an important part of our family, who has been with us for 13 (yes, 13!) years. We’ve always paid attention to what we feed Sadie, with all treats in moderation, so we thought it might be fun to try making some heart healthy dog treats for her to enjoy. As Sadie continues to age, we are more conscious of the ingredients of her treats and want to give her as many nutritious foods as we can. And thus, Sadie’s Healthy Dog Treats were born!

These treats were incredibly easy to make and only took about 50-60 minutes from start to finish. As you can see, Sadie was waiting patiently for something to drop while we were whipping up this recipe, and she’s also a big fan of the finished product. We hope your lovable pups enjoy these all-natural treats as much as Sadie does!

Try making our homemade pumpkin puree for these snacks, it’s really quite easy! Click here for our Easy Pumpkin Puree recipe. If you don’t have the time or aren’t feeling adventurous enough to make a homemade puree, store-bought works just as well.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup natural peanut butter
  • ½ carrot finely grated
  • ½ cup cold water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Lightly grease baking sheets or line with parchment.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the oats and flour.
  • Add the pumpkin, eggs and peanut butter, stirring to combine.
  • Add the carrot and enough water to bring the dough together. If needed, add more flour and water so that the dough is not too sticky and will roll out easily.
  • Dust your surface with flour and roll the dough about 1/4“ thick, and cut with cookie cutter. Gather and re-roll the scraps, and continue to cut out more treats until you have used all the dough.
  • Place treats on baking sheet and bake for about 20 -30 minutes, or until crisp.

Notes

It’s very important to check the ingredient label on the peanut butter you use. Be sure Xylitol is not listed as one of the ingredients. This is very harmful to dogs. If your dog has any dietary restrictions or health issues, please check with your veterinarian before introducing a new food. This recipe will yield about 50 medium size treats, more if using a smaller cookie cutter. Store snacks in a sealed container in the fridge, or freeze some to reward your pup later on.
