Mixed fruit salad with honey and cinnamon

While traveling in Greece this past summer,  we were introduced to the most delightful dessert.  Once again, the food in Greece did not disappoint!  After another fantastic meal on the island of Naxos, our waiter, Manoli,  brought us a platter of fruit to enjoy.  It looked like a simple platter of apples and oranges, but the taste was incredible.   Manoli explained to us that the dish was called Froutosalata- Mixed Fruit Salad. We knew there was something extra special about this dish, so we asked Manoli to let us in on the secret.  He explained that the secret was using Greek honey mixed with orange juice. That’s it! Well, we figured, we can do that!  We showed Manoli our website and told him that one day we would feature the Froutosalata on it and in keeping our promise, here it is.  This recipe can be made using a variety of fruits, but we especially loved the combination of apples and oranges.

There’s really no other way to say it other than this has to be one of the “simplest recipes you can make and by far one of the tastiest!” We know you probably are wondering how could this dish taste so great?  Trust us, it just does! Need some more convincing? Make it for yourself and find out!

Froutosalata- An Easy Dish to Assemble

Choose the type of apple you like most (we chose to use Gala apples for their mild and sweet flavor–it pairs nicely and didn’t overpower the sweetness of the oranges). Wash and peel apples. However, you may also leave the peel on; it’s all about your preferences.  Using a sharp knife, cut the apple in half through the center. Cut each half in half. Remove the core from each quarter and then slice each quarter into thin slices. Nice even slices make for a very pretty presentation!

Peel the oranges. While holding the orange firmly on a cutting board carefully cut the orange into rounds using a sharp knife.  Try and remove most of the pith (that pesky white stuff between the orange zest and fruit!) that didn’t come off when peeling the orange, as it can sometimes be bitter.  Don’t those bright orange slices look divine?!

Arrange the slices of apples and oranges on a serving dish.  Now comes that special secret. In a small bowl combine honey and orange juice.  Pour mixture over arranged fruit slices and sprinkle with cinnamon. Honestly, it doesn’t get much easier.

We are not sure that Manoli will remember our site, but we hope to one day to return to Naxos and show him!  So for now Manoli, Ευχαριστούμε (thank you) from the bottom of our hearts!

We hope you will enjoy this recipe for Froutosalata-Mixed Fruit Salad, compliments of Manoli!
