If you’ve only ever had grapefruits raw, you are missing out! Broiling not only brings out so much natural flavor goodness but the warmth and caramelization take them to another level. To be honest we grew up dowsing grapefruit in refined sugar (embarrassing!) but this recipe is our grown-up nod to our childhood favorite. This recipe is simple with just 4 ingredients, grapefruits and honey, cinnamon and lemon zest to enhance the flavor.
Grapefruits are a low-calorie fruit and packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that aid in keeping your heart functioning properly. They also contain a lot of water which helps keep you hydrated. We also added cinnamon, one of our favorite spices, for its flavor AND heart-healthy benefits. Cinnamon is anti-inflammatory and can help to lower “bad” cholesterol levels.
To sweeten this tangy fruit dish we used honey. It’s another antioxidant-rich ingredient that can help lower blood pressure. Once you have cut the grapefruits in half and loosened each section of fruit with a knife top with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon before placing on a lined baking sheet and setting under the broiler. It just takes a few minutes so keep a watchful eye so that they don’t burn! The grapefruits will get super soft and the honey and cinnamon will carmelize. Remove from the oven and top with more cinnamon and honey if you’d like before serving. We also like to add a little lemon zest for an extra zip of flavor!
