We love summertime for the abundance of fresh berries that are in season! But do you ever find yourself with too many berries that you can’t possibly eat them all before they go bad? Well, then you need to make chia seed jam! It’s a great way to make your fruit last longer and reduce food waste. Making this Blackberry Chia Jam is a healthier alternative to store-bought jams and jellies that are loaded with sugars and preservatives. Plus this recipe is easier than you may think! It uses only 4 ingredients and is ready in about 15 minutes.
This blackberry chia jam is a versatile condiment that’s just the right mixture of tart and sweet. It pairs perfectly on a charcuterie board, your morning toast, oatmeal, a Greek Yogurt topping or an update to the normal PB&J sammie, the options are endless!
We used frozen blackberries that we had picked from a local farm earlier this summer. We love living in Georgia and having access to so many great family farms to pick fresh produce at. We picked a huge bucket full and froze a large portion of them to make them last longer. Now we can enjoy them all through the colder months!

How to freeze fresh blackberries
Start by washing the blackberries and pat dry with a kitchen towel. Line a baking sheet or large dish with parchment paper. Line the blackberries on the tray being sure to leave room between them so that they don’t clump together as they freeze. Place in the freezer for about 2 hours. Check halfway through to break up any clumps that may have formed. Once frozen, place in a freezer bag or container and store in the freezer. Pre-freezing helps to make sure your berries don’t end up in a giant clump that is too hard to break up later. You’ll be able to enjoy the berries all year long!
Why Chia Seeds?
The chia seeds in this recipe act as a natural thickening ingredient. If you aren’t familiar with chia seeds, they plump up which is how they help to create the jammy consistency of this dish. These little seeds pack a huge punch in the nutrition department! They are packed with antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 and plant-based protein.
